Bactericidal
At Derma Biosciences, we are developing a new class of plant-derived bactericidal and Antimicrobial treatments designed to combat antimicrobial resistance while addressing the microbial drivers of inflammatory skin disease.
Acne affects up to 85% of people aged 12–241 and is frequently treated with oral or topical antibiotics for extended periods, increasing the risk of bacterial resistance and disruption of the skin microbiome³. Rising resistance has been reported in key dermatological pathogens including Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus2.
Globally, antimicrobial resistance was associated with 1.27 million deaths in 20193. At the same time, skin diseases affect around 1.9 billion people worldwide, driving a dermatology therapeutics market estimated at £24–£32 billion, with projected growth of ~9–11% CAGR4.
These trends highlight the urgent need for new non-antibiotic antimicrobial solutions capable of targeting pathogenic bacteria without contributing to resistance.

Our research focuses on identifying and extracting bioactive compounds from medicinal plants with potent antimicrobial activity.
Using our proprietary extraction and formulation platform, we have developed specialised complexes capable of targeting key dermatological pathogens including:
- Cutibacterium acnes
- Staphylococcus aureus
Laboratory testing has demonstrated that our antimicrobial complexes exhibit both bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity, helping to inhibit bacterial growth while actively eliminating pathogenic microbes.
Our lead complexes include:
ACNX Complex

Dermepair Complex
Sebostatic Complex
